WiFi is disconnected on the laptop - we solve the problem! Why does the Internet disappear through the router The router turns off when the PC is turned on

Today I decided to talk about one not very popular problem that is sometimes encountered when setting up Wi-Fi router... The situation is this: we install a Wi-Fi router, configure it, the Internet works on all devices, both by cable and by Wi-Fi. But when we turn off the desktop computer (or even a laptop) connected to the router via a network cable, the Internet connection is lost on all devices. That is, connecting to Wi-Fi networks there is, but the internet does not work. It turns out that the router distributes the Internet only when the stationary computer is turned on. We turn off the PC, the router stops distributing the Internet.

I must say right away that this should not be so. A router is an independent device, it distributes the Internet without connecting to any device, and does not depend on computers in any way. If you have the problem described above, then the matter is most likely in the wrong configuration of the Wi-Fi router. It is in setting up a connection to an Internet Service Provider (WAN).

The Internet through a router does not work after turning off the computer

1 Most likely you have an Internet connection using PPPoE, or PPTP. This is the whole point. To connect to the Internet, you need to run a high-speed connection on your computer. The connection itself goes through a username and password. And the problem is that after installing the router, you continue to start this connection. And this is not necessary, I will explain now.

The connection that was configured on your computer does not need to be started after installing the router. it the connection must be configured on the router, this is very important point! That is, in the settings of the router, you must select the type of connection and set the necessary parameters for connecting to the Internet. When the router itself establishes a connection to the provider, it will distribute the Internet to all your devices, including the computer via cable. You can delete the broadband connection on your computer.

And again: the main thing is to set the correct parameters for connecting to an ISP. If you do not know where to specify these settings on your router, then see the instructions for configuring the router. You can see it on our website, on this page. Basically, these settings need to be set on the "WAN" or "Internet" tab. This is how these settings look on a TP-Link router:

If anything, ask in the comments, I will try to help with advice.

2 There is a problem with the MAC address. This is another reason why the router may stop distributing the Internet after the computer is turned off. Here you need to know for sure whether your ISP is binding by MAC address. You can check with the provider's support.

If there is a MAC binding, then there are already two options:

  1. Call the support of the Internet provider, and ask to register a new MAC address. Your router's address. It is indicated on the router itself, on a sticker. With some providers, you can do it yourself, through Personal Area.
  2. And the second one is to clone the MAC address on the router from the computer to which the Internet was connected. You can do this yourself in the router settings. But, you must connect the router to the computer whose MAC address you want to clone. I wrote about this in more detail in the article

conclusions

Perhaps there are some other reasons why the operation of the router may depend on the computer. But, I think that first of all it is the wrong configuration of the router. That is, when an Internet connection is launched on a computer, then the Internet is, of course, on the router. When the computer is turned off, the Internet on the router disappears, and it does not undress it. It's simple.

On a laptop. Thus, the connection to the Internet is cut off, important notifications and notifications do not come, and after all, without the Internet, as you know, it is impossible to live at all. Many people blame the manufacturers of devices - a laptop or a router for this, although the problem is most often easily solved with a couple of mouse clicks.

Today we will study the main possible reasons for this situation, and find out what to do if WiFi stops working on a laptop.

WiFi is disconnected on laptop - we solve the problem!

If the laptop's connection to the Internet via WiFi is unstable and constantly breaks, then there may be several reasons for this - like certain settings operating system, and a malfunction of the device, or poor communication from the provider or operator of the cellular network.

Perhaps you should also pay attention to this video to understand what factors affect the stability of a WiFi connection.

Disable battery saving

The main reason for constantly disabling WiFi on laptops lies in the power and energy saving settings. Since the laptop is mobile device battery powered, manufacturers are trying to reduce the power consumption of the device in favor of greater autonomy and longer battery life.

By default, the performance of the device on battery power is slightly reduced in favor of power saving. Also, in order not to waste electricity on unused functions, the operating system turns off some components of the computer. For example, if the WiFi connection is idle or not actively used, the WiFi adapter may be disabled to save energy. Therefore, your favorite laptop, left unattended, carefully disables unnecessary functions and deprives you of a stable Internet connection.

Power settings are located in the control panel. However, please note that the manufacturer often installs additional programs to control power consumption, and the reason for disabling WiFi may be hidden in them.

Let's open the taskbar and select the power supply item. The control panel and the item we need can be easily found using the search.

In the power supply window that opens, you can see which power management scheme is active at the moment, as well as go to its detailed configuration.

In the window that opens, you can configure the screen off time and the sleep mode timeout. We are interested in the item that changes additional power options.

Find the item responsible for WiFi operation. Here it is long referred to as a wireless network adapter. Change the value to high performance.

After changing the power plan, restart the device and check if the problem is resolved.

Reboot the router

If the problem persists, restarting your router may help. The most in a simple way will unplug and turn on the device.

You can also reboot the device through the administration panel by going to the address 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 in your browser, entering your username and password, and clicking the corresponding button. The exact address and reboot method depends on the device model, and the login and password should be changed from standard admin / admin to your personal ones.

We check the network signal and the stability of the Internet connection

How to increase the speed of a wi-fi router and the Internet, we discussed in one of the previous articles. In our situation, it is worth paying attention to how far the router is from the laptop and through which obstacles the signal passes.

If, in addition to WiFi internet It also works unstably over a wired connection, perhaps it is worth calling the provider and solving the problem of a bad Internet with him.

Internet speed can be easily checked using online service speedtest.net- after all, if the values differ from those declared by the provider in the lower direction, this is a reason to be puzzled by the quality and level of the signal.

Reinstalling the driver

Reinstalling the wireless adapter driver may also help. To do this, you need to do the following:

  • go to the website of your laptop manufacturer;
  • enter the model of your device;
  • select an operating system;
  • download the latest version and install the new driver.

Loading method software differs from the manufacturer and model of the device. Try to download the latest drivers for your operating system and device.

We have sorted out the most popular reasons leading to the fact that laptop WiFi is constantly turned off. It's good if the problem was solved by changing the power plan, and the performance of both the router and the laptop does not raise any questions. If the problem has not been solved, it may be worth contacting a specialist.
