How to connect Windows Phone as a modem

The ability to use smartphones to connect to the Internet via a PC or laptop is not a new option. Previously, this would require the use of a USB cable, and in currently all the equipment needed to distribute the signal is already built into the mobile device.

The transmission is carried out wirelessly, that is, when this option is enabled, the smartphone becomes a WiFi router that transmits the signal to other devices. This feature is available on all versions of the "tiled" operating system. However, there are some minor differences for each of them. For example software The 7th series was capable of supporting up to five devices at a time, and the OS of the 8th series and higher provides Internet connection for up to eight devices.

Tethering on Windows Phone is activated by enabling this function in the "Settings" menu section. When activated, a special indicator will appear in the status bar of the smartphone. In order to start using the device to distribute an Internet signal, you must perform the following sequence of actions.

  1. Make sure that the data transfer option on the smartphone is turned on and the Internet connection is available. This can be done in the "Network" section of the settings menu.
  2. Return to the general settings menu and find the item called "Internet Sharing".
  3. Activate the function by clicking on this item to display the "Enabled" mark.

Important before how to enable tethering on Windows Phone make sure this feature is supported by your current carrier. As a rule, sharing a network from a smartphone for other devices is called tethering and is paid additionally.

When you activate the "Shared Internet" function, a PC or laptop will independently detect a new available network. You just need to select the desired connection from the list provided.

Some owners of devices running Microsoft's operating system want to use their smartphone for a wired connection, rather than as a WiFi hotspot. Accordingly, the topic of how how to use Windows Phone as a USB modem... In order to establish a wired connection, access to the system files of the device is required. And Microsoft does not provide this to its users due to its security policy. That's why Windows Phone as a USB modem cannot be connected to a PC.

When using a mobile device as a connection point to a network, you can set a password and a name for it, which will be displayed on all connected devices. To do this, you need to do the following:

  • - open the settings section in the device menu;
  • - find the item "Shared Internet" and, holding it, select the option "Install";
  • - fill in the fields that appear.

And at least use Windows Phone as USB Modem impossible, the wireless network will become fully accessible to nearby devices. However, it is worth remembering several features that accompany the operation of the device in such a mode.

  1. If you activate the shared network, you cannot use the wireless connection from other sources. That is, the smartphone will only be able to transmit the connection of the mobile operator, and not the one that it receives from third-party sources.
  2. Before, how to use Windows Phone as a modem you need to familiarize yourself with the existing restrictions of the mobile operator. This is due to the fact that all devices connected to the common network function according to the same tariff plan as the device itself.

Considering the question, how to use Windows Phone as a modem via wireless network is also worth noting that not all mobile operators provide this service. Also, using the common Internet, you can not only connect another device to the World Wide Web, but also create a separate local network.

Articles and Life Hacks

At the moment, a smartphone without access to the network seems to be a completely useless device. That is why such a topic as setting up the Internet on Windows Phone 8 remains invariably relevant.

Unfortunately, until now, not everyone knows how to properly set up their device, and thereby begin to fully use its capabilities and functions.

Internet setup

  1. As a rule, it is enough to go to the special section of the Marketplace and find suitable program, then install it and reboot the mobile device.
  2. So, for Samsung devices, the Network Profile application is suitable (you can find it in Zone), for Nokia Lumia you can download Nokia Network Setup (via Collection), and HTC owners should install Connection Setup (via Apps).
  3. If this does not help, you will have to register all the settings in manual mode. To do this, find the item "Data transmission" and select the option that allows you to add a new access point.
  4. Each mobile operator offers to enter certain unique data here. After entering, the mobile device restarts and the Internet should start working.
Of course, it is very good if the user has the ability to surf the Wi-Fi network. You just need to activate this function. But what if you can only use the mobile Internet?

How not to make a mistake when entering an access point? Let's try to figure it out.

How to register an access point

  1. When you call support, you can try to get automatic settings from your cellular operator. The phone number of the subscriber center is easy to find on the official website of the service provider, or ask the specialist of the nearest communication salon.
  2. If the settings did not come (or you cannot save them), they should be registered in manual mode. As already mentioned, this can be done through a special option in the item "Data transmission".
  3. Here they usually register not only the access point itself (or APN), but also a username and password. Often the latter parameters are the same.
  4. The password and username of the Beeline operator are registered in this way: beeline. The same goes for MTS and MTS Belarus (mts).
  5. Operators Life and Megafon suggest leaving these two fields empty. If we use TELE 2, we don't need to fill them out either.
  6. Now let's move on to the access point. If the operator is MTS, it is spelled like this: internet.mts.ru. In a similar way, it is prescribed for Beeline (internet.beeline.ru) and TELE 2 (internet.tele2.ru).
  7. For the Life operator, the APN point looks a little different (internet.life.com.by). If we use MTS Belarus, we simply enter mts. If the operator Megafon is internet.
After the settings are specified, we try to use the Internet in any convenient way. Also, do not forget to activate the data transfer function over the mobile network.

For the Windows Phone operating system, I have already opened a special one on this site. This is the third article in this section, and in it I will write about how to configure the distribution of the Internet over Wi-Fi on a phone that runs on Windows Phone 8 (there is no official update to Windows Phone 8.1 yet, as soon as it appears, I will edit the article if there are any changes in the Internet sharing setting).

After a few days of using the phone on Windows Phone, I really like this mobile system. This is something new and fresh in comparison with Android, which I just got tired of. Now, we will turn Windows Phone 8 into a real one. Wi-Fi router... We will set up the distribution of the Internet, in the mobile operating system from Microsoft, this feature is called Internet Sharing.

To be honest, I really liked how this feature is done in Windows Phone 8. It's simple, and everything works like a clock, compared to the HTC One V (Android 4.0). I think the Internet Sharing feature looks the same on all Windows Phone 8 phones. I'll show it using the Nokia Lumia 925 as an example.

We just need to turn on the mobile Internet (data transfer)... You can use 2G, 3G and even 4G networks. It all depends on your phone, provider and coverage. Further, in the "Shared Internet" section, you just need to enable the function, set the network name and password to it. And that's all, our phone will distribute the Internet, which it will take from the mobile provider. You can connect others mobile devices, tablets, laptops, TVs, etc.

And now for more details.

Windows Phone 8 as a Wi-Fi router

First, you need to enable data transfer. Simply put, you need to turn on the mobile Internet if you have it disabled. Go to settings (being on the desktop, swipe left and select "Settings" in the list)... Then we look for the item “ data transfer“, Go into it and select“ included“. Below, you can specify the fastest 2G, or 3G connection.

Attention, for using mobile internet, the operator can withdraw money. Sometimes, not a little money. Check with the operator about the rate at which you can access the Internet. Now, operators offer not expensive tariffs, for example, pay per day.

When the Internet is working, the corresponding icon should appear on the notification panel.

A window will appear in which you need to change the name of the Wi-Fi network that the phone will broadcast and the password for this network. Or you can leave the data that has already been indicated. Click on the “ ready“.

That's it, our phone on Windows Phone 8 is already broadcasting Wi-Fi network, you can connect other devices to it. A maximum of 8 devices can be connected at the same time. That's enough (on Android, maximum 5 devices)... By the way, you will recognize that shared Wi-Fi access to the mobile Internet is enabled by the icon that appears on the notification panel.

To connect, just select from the list of available networks (on the device you want to connect to the internet) created by us network, and specify the password, which can be viewed in the "Shared Internet" section.

On a laptop, it will look something like this:

Read about how to connect your Android device. Oh, I wrote the same.

To stop sharing the Internet, just turn off this function in the "Shared Internet" section.

By the way, you can set the limit for mobile Internet, for example, per day, and the phone will warn you when the limit will end. So, you can save yourself from additional costs. After all, the Internet over the limit, as a rule, is not cheap.

This is done in the same place, in the settings. Just swipe left to go to the “ annexes“. Select “ data control“. Click on the “ set a limit“, And follow the instructions.

A very useful function that can be useful not only when setting up Internet sharing, but also during normal use of the mobile Internet on the phone.
