Choosing a WiFi router for fiber optics. GPON technology - optical access network Ont terminal with wi fi function

Not so long ago used for high-speed data transmission. Previously, not every user could afford to install a separate terminal in his apartment that worked only for him.

In this regard, Internet providers “launched” an optical cable into an apartment building and connected it to a network module, and copper wires or twisted pairs that transmitted the information flow went from it to apartments. At the same time, the data transfer rate dropped significantly. But with the creation of FTTB connectors, the situation has changed dramatically.

for optical cable

Now every resident of the city can afford a separate fiber optic router. But at the same time, another question arose: how to transmit an Internet signal via Wi-Fi, for example, to connect a tablet, smartphone or laptop? To solve this problem, you need to buy a router with a built-in Wi-Fi module. But a wide range of products on the market can shock even an experienced user.

In order not to get lost in all the variety of devices, you need to determine what, in your understanding, means the best Wi-Fi router? Perhaps this is a combine that can easily provide high-speed Internet from a dozen devices? Or will it be a compact device with an optimal ratio of price, functionality and durability? To help you figure this out, let's define what parameters a fiber optic router with WiFi should have.

Ports and Bandwidth

Previously, when an optical cable was first brought into an apartment building, connected to a terminal, and only then transmitted an Internet signal to apartment owners, an FTTH port was used. Not so long ago, a new format was developed - FTTB, which allows you to connect optical fiber to a router located in your home. To connect directly to the router, two groups of ports are used - WAN and SFP.

The first group is the most common. Outwardly, the WAN port is a regular connection connector. However, before making a purchase, check with your provider what kind of WAN port is needed for connection. A fiber optic router equipped with an SFP connector is suitable for connecting any cable, as it is a standard format.

When choosing a router with a WAN port, you need to make sure that the throughput is not lower than the signal speed that your operator guarantees you. Otherwise, you risk overpaying for the Internet. SFP connectors provide data reception at speeds up to 1 Gb / s and provide optimal throughput for any connection.

WiFi standards

Having chosen a router with high bandwidth, you need to decide on it, otherwise a situation will arise when the router can receive a high-speed signal, but it cannot distribute it to mobile devices via a Wi-Fi network.

Therefore, when purchasing a fiber optic router, make sure that the wireless interface standard matches one of the following:

  • IEEE 802.11b - create a Wi-Fi network with a data transfer rate of up to 11 Mbps;
  • IEEE 802.11g is a higher speed protocol providing speeds up to 54 Mbps;
  • IEEE 802.11n is the most advanced standard in existence, transmitting a signal at speeds up to 300 Mbps.

When choosing a router in a store, you need to make sure that the Wi-Fi speed guaranteed by the device is not lower than the Internet speed that the operator provided you with. Now let's look at the most popular router models among customers.

D-Link-615 router series

D-Link is one of the leading suppliers to the domestic Internet equipment market. Its products are noted by users for the best value for money.

When choosing a fiber optic router for the first time, take a closer look at the DIR-615 model. A simple and intuitive interface simplifies setup. The radius of "distribution" of a Wi-Fi signal with a speed of up to 300 Mbps with two antennas will be enough to cover the entire area of the apartment. There is a built-in IPTV function for watching interactive TV.

Another outstanding representative of the series is D-Link DIR-615/FB. The router is equipped with a WAN port and two antennas that provide signal distribution over a fairly large area at speeds up to 300 Mbps, it has a LAN connector for cable Internet connection.

D-Link routers for high speed internet

The D-Link DVG-N5402GF fiber optic router is one of the best, adapted for high-speed data transfer. It is equipped with 4 ports that provide signal reception at speeds up to 1 Gb / s, a WAN format connector. It has a Wi-Fi interface of the 802.11n standard, which causes data transfer at speeds up to 350 Mb / s. Two detachable antennas cover a large area.

The D-Link DIR-825/ACF router uses an SFP connector to receive data, thanks to which the Wi-Fi distribution speed reaches 1167 Mbps when up to 4 devices are connected to the network at the same time. USB interface can be used to connect MAC address filtering capability and advanced security protocols will protect your network from intrusion.

Routers from the provider

Some providers, when connecting a fiber optic cable, offer their own fiber optic router. Rostelecom, Beeline, MTS are well-known operators who supply their equipment at the time of subscription. However, the connection cost increases significantly. In order not to overpay, you can choose your router, because there is no difference from which manufacturer to use the device.

At the same time, it must be remembered that the parameters of the input signal correspond to the guaranteed data transfer rate. As the best option, we can recommend Mikrotik RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN with an impressive appearance and original design.

An alternative could be Huawei EchoLife HG-8240. It has several slots for connecting devices via local network, a special port for interactive TV and provides data transfer rates up to 1Gb per second.

Features for optical fiber

In some cases, when connecting the Internet, a terminal can be installed inside the apartment. Employees of the provider company themselves install such a device and connect fiber optics to it. Which router to choose and how to connect it to the terminal is up to you.

First you need to combine the selected router and optical terminal. This is done with a cable. If an optical network has been installed in your home, then this can be done through an optical outlet. After that, the router connects to the computer and the connection to the Internet is checked:

  1. Open command prompt as administrator.
  2. Run netstat -e -s followed by ping google.com.

After that, it remains to check the speed of the Internet signal. To do this, open the "Task Manager" and select the "Network" tab. If the connection speed matches the one guaranteed by the provider, then you have taken into account all the recommendations on how to connect the fiber to the router and have chosen the right router.

Until recently, fiber-optic communication was not in demand and was considered a kind of luxury. Now, due to GPON routers, this problem has begun to be solved. For just a small amount, many providers are ready to provide a fiber optic network for any room: apartment or office.

How does a router work?

Due to GPON networks, which are passive, the router has a traffic speed of no more than 2.5 Gbps, which is considered a rather high indicator for an ordinary Internet user. All applications and resources with this signaling work with lightning speed. That is why many users want to purchase this type of router. Unfortunately, most of the owners end up with a lot of problems, which we will talk about next.

Model Disadvantages

All providers can supply their users not only with the Internet, but also with modems that will ensure signal reception at the best level. But almost all of them have a serious drawback. The routers do not support WiFi wireless networking. GPON routers are often produced with this disadvantage, so, as a rule, many people have this problem. The differences between the models are in the name and appearance.

Of course, you can find modems that work with the wireless module, but they are much more expensive. Moreover, the use of such providers is simply unprofitable. Each subscriber wants maximum speed at minimum cost, so it will be more profitable to work with the option offered by the Internet company.

MGTS GPON routers

Ideally, in such a situation it is better to use It is a universal device that combines several devices at once. We are talking about a GPON modem, a NAT router, a 4-port switch, an access point and a Voip gateway.

What does the user ultimately get from using the MGTS device? It can not only work with the Internet at great speed, but also create an access point.

Setting up a GPON router

MGTS type routers work on approximately the same principles, so they are easily and similarly configured, even if they are from different manufacturers. The only differences that the consumer may encounter are a different interface and menu name.

As mentioned above, GPON modems are one of the fastest options, so they need to be configured correctly. First you need to connect the device using a twisted pair cable (it is usually supplied) to the computer. Next, go to the control panel, after going to the network address 192.168.1.1. It is also written on the device itself and on the box. A menu will open in which you must enter your username and password. They are identical - the word admin.

Not all MGTS GPON routers support an interface in Russian. Therefore, you often have to either immediately install another firmware or change the parameters in English.

Immediately you need to change the password from the MGTS GPON modem. To do this, go to the "Administration" section, there will be an "Administrator" menu. Unfortunately, it is impossible to change the login and account name, the password is allowed. This should be done for security reasons. The owner will see the line "Old password", in which he needs to enter a combination of letters, as well as the next two, which are already responsible for the new code. Next, click on "Submit". The device will automatically reboot. The user will need to log into the control panel again with a new password.

In order to work with a wireless connection, you must enter the "Networks" menu. Next, in the "Select SSID" column, you must enter the number of networks. To activate the wireless signal mode, check the box next to the "Enable SSID" entry. The maximum connection to the network must be set in the "Maximum clients" column. Next, the owner needs to pay attention to the "Name" column, which indicates the name of the access point. If you want to hide your network, then you need to activate the "Hide SSID" option.

Configuring Ports and Wireless Security

Everyone knows that an unpassworded wireless access point is a great success with all neighbors who have problems with the Internet or devices for distributing it. How do such gifts end for everyone? The speed drops dramatically and traffic is consumed. That is why you need to put a password on your access point.

To do this, go to the "Protection" menu. There, the owner will have to select the number of the network that he plans to secure with a password. In the appropriate column, you need to enter your combination. It must contain at least 8 characters. Of course, like any other password, it can only contain characters from the Latin alphabet and numbers.

When choosing encryption, it is better to install WPA2. When it works, it is almost impossible to hack the access point, of course, if the password is really complex.

Port forwarding

If the owner plays online games on suspicious resources and works with torrents, then he needs to make a MGTS GPON router. To do this, go to the "Port Forwarding" section, then to "Applications". After that, you need to enable this option with the "Activation" button and fill in all the required fields.

The only difficulty that the owner may experience is the choice of protocol. For the correct selection, you will have to find out with which application the application works. If, nevertheless, the difficulties do not disappear, it is better to forward several ports at once.

The constant development of technology allows you to connect the Internet to apartments at ever higher speeds. One of the methods for such a connection is Gpon technology, which is also offered by Rostelecom.

Gpon - general job description

Passive optical technologies (Pon) appeared not very long ago, but they are confidently replacing traditional methods of organizing Internet access using copper cables. Optical cable has huge advantages over copper cable:

The "G" prefix suggests that the connection is at gigabit speed. This technology is called passive because there is no active network equipment between the provider's node and the end user, and the optics are laid directly into the client's apartment.

No equipment is required, because the length of the optical cable without additional signal amplification is up to 20 km, and in the near future, developments are underway to increase the line to 60 km.

Connection can be carried out in synchronous and asynchronous modes. Usually providers prefer asynchronous mode. The maximum speed is limited to 2.5 Gb / s for receiving, and 1.25 Gb / s for transmitting information.

The principle of connection to Rostelecom

In order to connect, a future subscriber needs to contact the nearest Rostelecom office and leave an application. You can connect one or more services to choose from:

  • Internet;
  • City (landline) telephony;
  • IP TV.

Any connection to the provider by wire requires additional costs.

Those customers who have previously been connected to Rostelecom using ADSL technology know this from their own experience, new subscribers will be told about this when submitting an application.

The main difficulty is the installation of the cable, which, due to its specific qualities, is not desirable to be strongly bent, so usually all equipment is installed in the hallway. The equipment includes a special ONT router designed to work in fiber optic networks, which can be rented directly from the provider or bought independently. It is desirable that an electrical outlet be installed in the hallway. The end devices are connected via a conventional twisted-pair Ethernet or via WiFi.

Gpon network diagram provided by the provider Rostelecom.

After technical issues are agreed with the client, a router is purchased, a service contract is concluded. The installation and laying of the cable, and the configuration of the router.

Setting up equipment for connection

If the router is purchased or rented from Rostelecom, then its initial configuration is carried out during installation directly by Rostelecom employees. In cases where the subscriber is buying a router himself or he already has equipment, the configuration options may vary depending on the model and manufacturer of network equipment, as well as on its capabilities. On the Internet, you can find enough information with step-by-step instructions for which you can set it up yourself.

Rostelecom offers its customers several models of ONT devices, one of which is G PON ONT RFT620. This is a fairly successful and versatile model that allows you to connect up to 4 devices to the LAN, and an unlimited number via wireless technology, it is possible to watch streaming TV, and connect up to 2 landline phones.

All settings are made through the web configurator. To do this, you need to type in the browser the address " 192.168.1.254", And enter the username and password: user / user. You do not need to drive in any Internet settings, this is already done by the provider. You just need to configure your home network to suit your needs:

  • turn on the wireless WiFi module;
  • change security settings;
  • set static or dynamic IP addresses, etc.

Services and packages

Rostelecom offers its customers many different options and service packages, the most popular of which are the following:

  • home Internet via fiber optic line with a choice of connection speed;
  • interactive TV with more than 160 channels;
  • home landline phone, with a choice of tariff for calls;
  • mobile telephony;
  • rent an ONT router at a low price.

All these services can be selected separately or combined into packages. The monthly subscription fee will also depend on the choice. The company holds constant promotions and discounts, information about which can be found on their portal. Also, for each region separately, the price for services is different.

Pros and cons of connecting using Gpon technology

Connecting via GPON, like any other method, has its positive and negative sides. The positives include the following:

  • The cable is pulled directly between the provider's PBX and into the user's apartment, i.е. there are no intermediate nodes, which significantly increases the speed of information transfer and signal stability.
  • The signal in a fiber optic cable is transmitted not by electrical, but by light pulses. This means that there is no danger of injury from electric shock at all.
  • The ability to connect several services at once, through one ONT device.

There are, of course, disadvantages in this connection method:

  • The optical wire is very afraid of sharp bends, and this suggests that it will be difficult to bring it around the apartment to distant rooms. It is also not recommended to place furniture and other heavy objects on the cable.
  • Although there is nothing of value in the cable for sale, trunk lines and wiring in entrances are constantly threatened by vandals.
  • Electricity is not transmitted through the cable, therefore, there is an increased interest in it from the side of animals. It is advisable to hide it in a box.

What is FTTH?

FTTH (fiber to the home) - optical fiber to the apartment. A terminal is installed in the apartment, and a cable from the terminal to a PC. FTTH is most often organized on the basis of PON technology (abbr. from the English. Passive optical network, passive optical network) - the technology of passive optical networks. Distribution access network PON is based on a tree-like fiber-cable architecture with passive optical splitters at the nodes, represents an economical way to provide broadband information transmission.

Technology "PON" - passive optical networks, prefix "G" - gigabit. They are passive because no active equipment is used in the section from the exchange to the subscriber - the fiber stretches to the client's apartment. Due to this, a high channel bandwidth is achieved and, as a result, the ability to connect several services via one line - telephone, television, Internet.

Of course, fiber optics is not laid as a single wire from the PBX to the apartment - this would be unprofitable, and the costs of the work carried out would never pay off. Therefore, in a certain section of the line, the signal is divided.
To divide the signal, a passive optical splitter was invented - a splitter that turns one fiber into two, four, eight, and so on.

What is ONT?

The device that will convert the fiber-optic interface into an Ethernet interface is an optical terminal - ONT. Depending on the modification, ONT can have functionality from a minimal to a full-fledged router, with the ability to connect WiFi, IPTV, telephony, and much more from one device. This terminal is installed in the subscriber's apartment.

According to unwritten rules, ONTs are mounted next to the hole where the optics are pulled in so that the length of the fiber around the apartment is as small as possible. Why can't you extend fiber optics deep into the apartment? It's simple - this thin "wiring" is very fragile and extremely sensitive to various bends, kinks, pressure (to put it mildly, you should not step on it or put furniture). From all of the above procedures, the fiber breaks. Fiber restoration and/or replacement is a very time-consuming process. For those who want to connect to the Internet using GPON technology, I strongly recommend that you do not stretch the fiber around the apartment! Have pity on your nerves and money, as well as the nerves of the employees of the company (Internet provider).

Communication between ONT and computer (if the Internet service is connected), as well as between ONT and STB (if IPTV service is connected) is carried out using a copper cable - UTP (twisted pair). ONT, like any other router, needs to be configured. Why you need to go to its WEB interface and configure it for the services you need (Internet, IPTV, VOIP).
